CRITIQUES AND REVIEWS

Ratledge with the Rome Symphony

INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING REVIEWS

BULGARIA

“There are some choirs that one never forgets after hearing them even once. The Shorter College Chorale is this kind of choir. The entire audience, including my colleagues, my students, my singers, and I personally were delighted to hear this wonderful choir. The beautiful sounds, coupled with the rich palette of nuances and the large panorama of dynamics, made their performance an extraordinary musical experience for us. Dr. John Ratledge, an impressive conductor with the highest degree of musicality, demonstrated a keen sense of phrasing, a deep feeling for musical form, and an extensive knowledge of different musical styles. His artistic power was mirrored on the faces of the singers, and it was fantastic to feel that energy coming from the stage. I hope they will return to the Sofia Academy of Music.” –Theodora Pavlovitch, Conductor, Associate Professor, Academy of Music (Sofia, Bulgaria)

GREECE

“The collaboration between the Intrarti Orchestra and the outstanding Shorter Chorale was an artistic event of the highest standard. Perfectly prepared under Maestro Ratledge’s baton, the performance of Duruflé’s Requiem was a memorable one. Members of my orchestra described the Shorter Chorale’s performance as ‘inspired,’ and all of us were simply amazed with the Chorale’s a cappella singing. I look forward to Chorale’s return to Athens for future collaborations!” –Nikolaos Haliassas, Conductor, Intrarti Orchestra (Athens, Greece)

“You were diamonds in the desert. This choir is simply fantastic!” –Panigistis Tsziotis, Concertmaster, Intrarti Orchestra (Athens, Greece)

“Your choir is simply fantastic. Your music travels straight to God, creating an incredible spiritual moment. The constantly evolving panorama of color is unbelievable, and the music is truly a revelation to me.” –Alina Peretti (Stanmore, England)

HUNGARY

“The Shorter Chorale’s sold-out performance at the Vigadó Concert Hall was a wonderful event indeed, fully enjoyed by everyone. The choir was superb, and this is not an empty compliment. The Shorter Chorale is obviously one the very best choral ensembles from the United States that we have heard performing in Budapest. You must return to this historic concert hall.” –Laszlo Irinyi, Concert Masters International (Budapest, Hungary)

KOREA:
"Prior to your concert in Dangjin tonight, I thought that the concert would be like any other concert which I had heard before. However, your concert was different, and I had to spend time thinking about why that particular concert was different for me. After a lot of thought, I realized that you see and hear something in each piece of music that I can’t see or hear. The sound of every piece is different. I must learn to hear what you hear!" –Park, Hern Ho, Music Arranger (Dangjin-Gun Chorus–Dangjin, South Korea)

"Your hands are the voice of God. Your faith is evident in every gesture."
–Lee, Ji Yeon (Alto, Dangjin-gun Chorus-Dangjin, South Korea)

"You are a magician, a wizard! What you have done with our choir
–the sound is simply amazing. It's simply amazing." –Jeon, E Hwa (Soprano, Dangjin-gun Chorus)

"You stepped in front of the choir, and the change........it was unbelievable!"
–Chief Officer Kang Dangjin Culture and Arts Center–Dangjin, South Korea)

"What a privilege to sing with such a great musician. Thank you, Maestro."

POLAND, THE CZECH REPUBLIC, GERMANY, AND AUSTRIA

“Both concerts were remarkable events in our cities. Shorter is an excellent and disciplined choir, with every piece, whether the Duruflé Requiem or folklore, showing a deep understanding of the music coupled with enthusiasm, artistry, and passion. The choir and orchestra were one ensemble, providing us a concert of impressive interpretation. The stirring standing ovations and numerous encores will be long remembered.” Jozef Wilkomirski, Conductor, Sudecka Philharmonia (Walbryzychu, Poland)

“A musical feast! This chorus has a profound knowledge of music, excellent interpretation, and a faultless, beautiful sound. From the lyric to the full rhythms of Africa, the audience was delighted. The Shorter Chorale, with its conductor, John Ratledge, gave Poland three hours of charm and beauty. Let us hope to have more events of this kind. The clapping shall never end!” —Alina Peretti (Stanmore, England)

“The Chorale pulled the cold out of unheated cathedrals and wrapped the warmth of beautifully blended sound around each of us. This group demonstrated a depth of feeling and an expanded artistic awareness that many do not achieve in a lifetime.” —Dr. Thelma Hall, Professor of English, Shorter College (Rome, Georgia)

“Their performances were described as ‘magical.’ Ratledge memorized introductory speeches in Czech, Polish, and German which impressed everyone from the start; however, the Chorale’s deeply emotional performances evoked strong responses in every city. One concert lasted three hours before the group was allowed to leave the stage. The conductor of the Walbrzychu Philharmonic was so impressed that he has invited the Chorale to tour Europe with his orchestra. Seven formal concerts—simply stunning!” Suzanne Robbins, ACFEA Tour Consultants (Tarrytown, New York)

RUSSIA
“An extraordinary concert, a tremendous success, and an inspiring display of artistry and professional skill.” Eugenia Sobol, The University of St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg, Russia)

“We have not witnessed such a success for many years in Glinka Cappella, one of the best concert halls of the world.” V. Scherbatov, Chief of the Department of Foreign Contacts (St. Petersburg, Russia)

“What professional skill, variety of tone and style!” Mayor (St. Petersburg, Russia)

“What a beautiful sound! A magnificent choir! They must come and sing with my orchestra, the second largest in the Ukraine.”—Alex Bielski, Agent of the Dniepropetrovsk Symphonic Orchestra (Ukraine)

“Judging by the warm reception, including five encores, our public loved them!” Information (St. Petersburg, Russia)

“The Shorter Chorale brought such great pleasure to our city! The Chorale feels subtle things and understands with their whole heart–one could hear it in the Rachmaninoff and the Chesnokov which were so wonderfully performed. You and your choir reveal a great respect for Russian culture and our music.” –Luba Petrovna, Musical Editor-in-Chief, Smolny Concert and Exhibition Centre (St. Petersburg, Russia)

FRANCE

“With standing room only, the final concert in the famous Madeleine church featured the Academie de St. Louis en L’Île de Paris which joined the Chorale for the Brahms Requiem. The reserved French audience responded uncharacteristically with thundering applause, a standing ovation, and repeated requests for encores.” –Suzanne Robbins, ACFEA Tour Consultants (Tarrytown, New York)

STATESIDE CONDUCTING REVIEWS:

“Weaving a tapestry of sonic splendor, John Ratledge and the extra-ordinary artistry of the Shorter Chorale creates a musical miracle in Spivey Hall, transcendent in achieving the promise of acoustical and staging magic.” –Sherryl Nelson, Executive Director, Spivey Hall, Clayton College and State University (Morrow, Georgia)

“The music world needs more conductors like John Ratledge who are making a difference in so many lives.” –Robert Page, Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

“He is a consummate teacher, giving himself with abandon to the goal of excellence in all he does, both within the classroom and the community where he works.” Dr. Larry McSwain, President Emeritus, Shorter College (Rome, Georgia)

“John's intuitive insights into the deeper meaning of the musical gesture illicit a profound response from the singers with whom he makes music. He is not merely a gifted conductor, but in fact an artist whose music speaks from the core of his being. His own personal diversity as a composer, conductor, educator, and artist speaks to the holistic philosophy by which he lives his own life. This renaissance approach to life manifests itself in inspired music making, challenging instruction, and the very highest expectations of greatness for himself and for his students.” Dr. Allen Hightower, Professor of Music and Director of Choral and Vocal Studies-Sam Houston State University (Huntsville, Texas)

He has won critical and public acclaim in a wide variety of venues, and his professional credentials are of the highest order, John's performances, prepared with the singular care and insight of a scholarly musician, are executed with distinction and passion. I have watched him work with countless all-state/honor choirs and transform them into first-rate ensembles that produced performances of life-changing experiences.” Dr. Alan Raines, Associate Professor of Music-Stetson University (Orlando, Florida)

REVIEWS OF ROME SYMPHONY CONCERT
5 August 2006

A marvelous performance of outstanding and popular repertoire to the raves of a packed house. Dr. Ratledge's ability to interact with the audience and to embrace the music is unsurpassed! Ms. Claxton's performance was perfection. Barbara Beninato, President, Rome Symphony Board (Rome, Georgia)

In the Rome Symphony Orchestra's Cool Pops Concert last night, Guest Conductor John Ratledge proved once again that he is a master conductor, whether the musical group be vocal or instrumental. Dr. Ratledge showed a surprising depth of courage and creativity as he took the orchestra to the farthest edge of their ability and then successfully several steps beyond this. No one expected such a performance, and all were stunned that Dr. Ratledge had made this group of musicians, after only two rehearsals, sound polished and professional. –Dr. Wilson Hall, retired Professor (Rome, Georgia)

I don't know that I have ever enjoyed a musical evening as much as I did tonight!!! You, Elizabeth, and the orchestra were magnificent!!! I was right proud of you!!!! Right now, while typing this, and quite often at other times, I am listening to one of the Shorter Chorale CD's under your direction. Each time I am amazed at how good they are, and they bring back great memories of our two Europe trips with you!! It was great seeing you!!! Again, a magnificent performance!!! –Dr. Jack Runninger, retired Optometrist (Rome, Georgia)

A perfect night. A perfect performance. Visiting UA professor John Ratledge and members of the Rome Symphony Orchestra did much more than entertain the capacity crowd gathered at the Huffman Center on the campus of Darlington School in Rome, Georgia for a Pops Concert Saturday, August 5. Ratledge's genius was perhaps most apparent in his choice of musical selections for the program. From the stunning melodies of "Porgy and Bess" to the beauty of the "Czardas," an aria from the opera "Die Fledermaus," Ratledge coaxed the best performance quality from each musician in the orchestra. From the contemporary to the classical, each selection delighted. Elizabeth Claxton, a former student of John Ramsaur's was the soloist for the evening. Her rendition of "Un Bel Di" from "Madame Butterfly" brought the audience to their feet. Indeed, it was a memorable event for those lucky enough to be season ticket holders (and their guests). A perfect night. A perfect performance. Bravo. –Dr. Charles Watterson, Chief Communications Officer of the Darlington School (Rome, Georgia)

The concert was one of the most magnificent performances that I have witnessed with the Rome Symphony Orchestra. You did an outstanding job. I love the way you interact with the audience, and I sincerely hope that you can join us again in the very near future. We have had only rave reviews!–Debra Cook, Rome Symphony Orchestra (Rome, Georgia)

LOVED THE CONCERT!!!! and loved seeing you for a quick minute. I hope this turns into an annual occasion; that would be great. –Katharine Lovvorn, retired Registrar (Rome, Georgia)

My name is Ralph Whitfield, the Bass Trombonist this past weekend in Rome. I just wanted to drop you a line and tell you that I enjoyed working with you this past weekend at the Rome Symphony concert. I certainly felt that the concert went extremely well. –Ralph Whitfield, Trombonist, Rome Symphony Orchestra (Gadsden, Alabama)

Rome, Georgia welcomed back a dear, old friend. Dr. John Ratledge led the Rome Symphony orchestra through a masterful and musical performance. In just two rehearsals, he succeeded in not only unifying a select group of musicians, but also creating a sound that left the audience wishing for more. With a diverse program spanning from the "Star-Spangled Banner" to Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise," Dr. Ratledge exemplified the true meaning of being a conductor. It is a privilege to be associated with him both professionally and personally as he is truly an inspiring individual. –Jessica Mavros, Marketing and Advertising, Shaw Industries Group, Inc. (Rome, Georgia)

The concert with Dr. John Ratledge as conductor was without doubt, the finest we have ever had the pleasure of hearing. In fact, we wondered if Dr. Ratledge had invited artists from the University of Alabama to perform with him in Rome. Dr. Ratledge has raised our Rome Symphony to another level or in the vernacular, he could get music out of a turnip. –Brenda Parrino (Rome, Georgia)

Saturday night's Rome Pops Concert with Dr. John Ratledge as guest conductor was MAGICAL! I watched as this thrilling music ignited the hearts fot the audience as well as the musicians. Afterwards, he was surrounded by grateful, beaming and sated patrons. –Becky McCord, Dental Hygenist and Personal Trainer (Rome, Georgia)

As guest conductor of the Rome Symphony Orchestra, Dr. John Ratledge inspired the musicians and audience to heights not heretofore experienced by Rome's patrons and the South's Oldest Orchestra! After the concert, there was as long a line of musicians as there were local friends queuing up for the opportunity to thank Dr. Ratledge and congratulate him upon his triumphant return to Rome. Everyone was saying that this should become an annual affair! Dr. John Ratledge's brilliance as a conductor is magnified by his commanding knowledge of the history of the composer and piece of music which he so masterfully is able to channel to the audience. The audience was enthralled by the music while being educated and entertained. I felt like I was at the Boston Pops! –Dr. Jim Bradshaw (Rome, Georgia)

It was wonderful to see John and enjoy his many gifts again–The Symphony was wonderful! –Sally Riggs (Rome, Georgia)

You were wonderful! You communicated well with the group, maintained a positive disposition, got us on your side very quickly, and called us to do more than we would have otherwise. Thanks for the kind words to the brass at several points. We may not know what to do with a compliment since they are rare, but we appreciate them when they do come along. On the way out, I heard several of the patrons going on and on about how much they enjoyed the concert. One said "This is the best thing I have heard in a long time." It was a very positive experience both for the audience and the orchestra. I hope that you will be asked and will have the time to come back to Rome and work with RSO again. –David McCurley, Hornist, Rome Symphony Orchestra

What a wonderful stroke of luck for me, to be parking for the concert ,just as you and Elizabeth Anne arrived to attend your remarkable performance Saturday evening at Darlington. I got the best hug of the night, I am quite sure. It was a beautiful concert and you were never better. You directed with such a demanding force, it was a pleasure to watch you. And your selections for the evening were wonderful, I especially enjoyed Porgy and Bess, George Gerswhin would have stood up with the rest of us had he been there. Thank you John for coming home to us. You should be very proud that you and your work are held in such high esteem in Rome. We all love and respect you and your talents, and we hope this will become an annual event. –Tooken Cade (Rome, Georgia)

In his novel, "Look Homeward, Angel" Thomas Wolfe theorizes "you can't go home again" but you (John Ratledge) soundly disproved that Saturday! Your masterful leadership of the Rome Symphony Orchestra brought scores of friends, former colleagues and new faces to their feet several times as the orchestra soared with harmonious blends in familiar pops, operatic and concert pieces. It was thrilling for everyone present. What a musical night and what a splendid return "home" to Rome for you. The glorious soprano notes sung in three arias with such ease by Elizabeth Anne Claxton, Shorter alumna and former student of John Ramsaur, served to make her "homecoming" just as spectacular for her and for all who heard her for the first or fiftieth time. –Ruth Martin, retired Volunteer Coordinator for the City of Rome (Rome, Georgia)

An old Japanese proverb goes: When there is no wind, row. We thank you for stirring the winds here last night, causing the breezes to blow beautiful sounds into places where - sometimes - lots of tough rowing has been demanded. Your talent and magic blow up a storm of reminders. HOW we miss the glide on the waters that you always provide. –Dr. Renva Watterson, Professor of Communications, Georgia Highlands College (Rome, Georgia)

I think it is amazing that a town the size of Rome,Georgia, could have a concert the quality of the one we heard Saturday night. We are lucky to have a wonderful reserve of talent and an organization like the Rome Symphony to pull it all together. But, the thing that made it so special is the amazing ability that John Ratledge has to somehow challenge and inspire musical artists to give their very best. When John stands in front of a group it does not make any difference if it is vocal or insturmental, hearts lift, music soars, and magic happens. Martha Alice Bryant–Bryant and Garrett Travel (Rome, Georgia)

What an enjoyable evening! We had a wonderful time at the Rome Symphony Orchestra Summer Pop! It was great having you back in Rome and even more enjoyable having you conducting the Rome Symphony. Your energy and command of the Symphony was absolutely spectacular! Having Elizabeth Claxton joining you was a wonderful idea and a great addition to your presentation. She is absolutely a wonderful singer and a fabulous example of your guidance and influence in her development and career. Thank you for sharing your talent with us and for your effort in making such an enjoyable evening. I will certainly look forward to your next performance, wherever that may be, with great anticipation. BRAVO! Michael Baker, President, Heritage First Bank (Rome, Georgia)

Bravo! Your symphony program at the Huffman Center was splendid. I can come next year also. Elizabeth Claxton was an excellent choice as your soloist--what a great voice and personality plus. Martha Lou Riddle (Rome, Georgia)
